The phone doesn't have a sensor capable of that, and a camera with a finger touching it won't read blood sugar.

This doesn't make the apps useless. It makes their function different from what the store usually suggests. They are diaries — and a good diary changes the medical consultation.

Why doesn't the cell phone measure?

Blood glucose is the concentration of glucose in the blood. To know this number, it is necessary to access a sample of the blood, either through a drop from a finger prick or through a sensor placed under the skin that reads the fluid between the cells.

The cell phone camera detects variations in light on the skin. This allows it to estimate heart rate, because the pulse changes the volume of blood in the finger with each beat. But there is no validated optical pathway that transforms this same reading into glucose concentration.

It's worth noting the most important point for those who depend on the number: To date, there is no non-invasive glucose meter approved by Anvisa (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency) or the American regulatory agency.. The Brazilian Diabetes Society has already publicly warned about this, precisely because of the circulation of apps and devices that promise measurement without pricking.

In other words: if an app claims to measure your glucose using the camera, fingerprint, or by bringing the phone close to your arm, it's lying. And trusting that number, for those who adjust their insulin, is truly dangerous.

What apps actually do

That being said, what remains is quite useful.

Organized record

You measure it with the glucometer and record it in the app. It seems like a small thing, but the digital record automatically stamps the date and time, and allows you to tag the context: fasting, before a meal, two hours later, before bed, after physical activity.

It is the context that gives meaning to the number. A 180 after lunch tells a completely different story than a 180 on an empty stomach, and the little paper notebook rarely keeps that distinction.

Chart and pattern

Thirty isolated values mean nothing. The same thirty values in a graph by time of day show, for example, that your blood glucose always rises in the late afternoon—information that changes behavior and that no one sees by looking at a list.

Report for the query

Perhaps the most underrated feature. Many of these apps export a PDF report with averages, variations, and values over the period. Taking this information to your endocrinologist yields much better results than trying to remember how the month went.

Record of what comes in together

The most comprehensive ones allow you to record the carbohydrate content of the meal, the insulin dose administered, medication taken, and exercise. It's the combination of factors that explains the number, not the number alone.

The apps that accompany the sensor

There is a different category, and it's quite confusing. These are the apps from manufacturers of continuous monitoring devices—those adhesive sensors worn on the arm.

In this case, the phone displays updated blood glucose levels periodically, with a continuous graph and alarms for high or low values. But note: The sensor in your body is what measures it., A medical device that you buy. The app only reads and displays the information. Without the sensor, the app does nothing.

It's also important to know that the sensor reading comes from the fluid between the cells, not from the blood itself, and therefore it usually lags behind the actual blood glucose reading by a few minutes. In situations of a rapid drop, this discrepancy matters, and the manufacturers themselves recommend confirming with a finger prick test.

How to choose a good diary

Looking at the product information in the store, certain criteria separate what is useful from what is merely decorative:

Exporting the data. If you can't extract a PDF or a spreadsheet, the history gets stuck there. That's the first thing to check.

It works without internet. You can record anywhere, even without a signal.

Context fields. If it only accepts the number, without specifying fasting or post-meal, it's not very useful.

Correct unit. In Brazil, milligrams per deciliter are used. Foreign apps sometimes use millimoles per liter, which needs to be changed in the settings—the two numbers are very different, and confusion is dangerous.

A readable privacy policy. Health data is sensitive. It's important to know where it's stored and with whom it's shared.

And a decisive negative criterion: Discard any app that promises to measure flawlessly.. The promise itself indicates that whoever made it has no commitment to transparency.

What keeps the record going?

The best app is the one you continue using into the third week. Two things help more than any feature: recording your blood sugar right away, while still holding the glucometer, and setting reminders for times when you tend to forget.

If the app requires lengthy registration and many taps to enter a value, abandonment is a matter of days. Simple wins over comprehensive here.

In short

Cell phones don't measure glucose, and there's no non-invasive device approved by regulatory bodies. What does exist is a diary that organizes what your glucometer or sensor has measured, transforms it into a graph, and delivers a decent report for consultation. Used this way, it's very helpful. Used as a meter, it's misleading—and in this matter, misleading people have consequences.

This text is for informational purposes only and does not replace medical advice.
